There are various types of sporting leagues across the world. These leagues cater to different sports in different parts of the world and are very different from one another. However, when it comes to certain organizational aspects of sports leagues, there is a high level of similarity between some leagues.

These leagues are arranged in a format that is very similar to one another. This is because of the fact that the organizational aspects of sports leagues do have a big role to play in the financial outcomes as well.

In this article, we will try to understand why sporting leagues across the world follow a league format.

Some of the common benefits of following the league format have been mentioned below:

Benefits of The League Format

There are some very obvious benefits related to following the league format. Some of these benefits have been explained below:

  • Marketing Benefits: First and foremost, it is important to realize that it is easier to market sports matches when they belong to a sports league. This is because viewers watch every match for two reasons in a sporting league.

Firstly, viewers watch the match as a contest in its own right. Secondly, viewers also watch every match as a stepping stone to moving ahead to the next stage of the tournament.

Over the course of the league, many pressure situations arise wherein teams face a must-win encounter or need to win by a certain margin.

Such situations lead to exciting encounters which further enhance the viewership of the game which ultimately leads to an increase in revenue. Hence, it can be said that the marketing of sports leagues becomes much easier as compared to bilateral tournaments.

  • Easier Organization: Also, the organization of sports leagues becomes much easier as there are considerably fewer administrative tasks involved in the organization.

The administrative tasks are managed at a league level and the fixtures are easily drawn out. There is no need for the administrative teams of the respective clubs to negotiate with each other and create several bilateral schedules. This arrangement is both cheaper as well as convenient and hence is followed by countries all over the world.

  • Relegation: The problem with the league format is that if the team is not in the top few teams, viewers tend to lose interest. However, in order to prevent this, sports leagues have come up with an innovative solution.

There are many leagues across the world that have created a system wherein the weakest team in the league is relegated to a lower-level competition. Similarly, the team which is the best in the lower league is relegated to the higher league.

This helps create interest and enthusiasm amongst the teams in the lower echelons as well. Teams try and fight hard in order to avoid relegation and this also helps increase the interest of the viewers in the league matches.

Types of League Schedules

Now, that we have already ascertained that it is better to ascertain sports matches as sporting leagues instead of bilateral ties, it is time to look at the various forms of sports league organizations that exist in the world.

  • Elimination Vs. Round Robin: Firstly, it is important to note that sporting leagues can be either the round-robin type or the elimination type.

Round-robin means that each team gets to play a set number of matches with other teams in their group. Their advancement to the next stage of the league depends upon the outcome of multiple matches. On the other hand, an elimination-based league means that every match will be a knockout match.

Each team that loses a competition will be eliminated from the league. It is common for large sporting leagues to follow a hybrid format i.e. robin matches at the earlier stages of the leagues and then knockout games to end the league.

  • Balanced vs. Unbalanced: If the sporting league chooses to conduct its matches in a round-robin manner, then it can either create a balanced or an unbalanced schedule. A balanced schedule is one where each team meets the other team an equal number of times.

On the other hand, an unbalanced schedule is when certain teams play with certain other teams more times than the others. The unbalanced schedule is generally used for financial reasons. This is because the sponsors want to minimize the number of games where two weak teams are playing.

  • Even vs. Uneven: It is also possible to have a schedule that is uneven in nature. This means that certain teams get to play more matches than the others. This is done to give some types of teams an advantage.

For instance, the teams that finished in the top spots in the league are given an additional chance in the knockout stages of the league. The uneven schedule is generally provided to teams as a reward for their past performance. Also, the uneven schedule is generally only used at the advanced stages of a tournament. Once again, this is done for financial reasons.

Teams that have won the most matches are likely to have higher viewership. As a result, conducting more matches involving such teams helps the league generate more revenue on the backs of stellar performance by the team.

To sum it up, the organizational aspects of sporting leagues are heavily influenced by the financial aspects of the league. This is the reason that sporting leagues which play diverse sports in diverse countries tend to operate in a very similar fashion.
